Thomas T
Hello! My name is Thomas Tokunaga, and I am pleased to make your acquaintance. While originally from the Bay Area, I’ve been an educator for over seven years now and have taught students all over the United States - from Kindergarteners in the Bronx to high school students earning college credits at UC Berkeley. After graduating from Emory University with a BA in English, I moved to New York to find my place in education amongst the best and brightest teachers and students alike. Currently, I am a graduate student in the School of Education at Hunter College and am looking to harness my diverse instructional experience to best fit the needs of students of all levels and abilities. My background in multi-subject tutoring has brought my students success and happiness inside and outside the classroom, as I specialize in catering my tutoring to develop both students’ academic skills and confidence in learning. Whether your child is writing their first similes and metaphors or factoring complex polynomials, I pride myself on breaking down all kinds of subject content in ways that meet them where they are and build on their prior mastery. During sessions, I work hard to personalize students’ schoolwork, test prep, and any other learning material to keep them engaged so that they acquire knowledge and skills that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. When students are performing above grade/class level, we work together to extend their learning to reach deeper levels of understanding and application. By collaborating on new and exciting goals based on their intrinsic interests, my students quickly embrace academic enrichment as we connect seemingly separate disciplines to weave their own unique webs of wisdom. I am always excited to work with new students and look forward to helping them strengthen and acquire new skills, knowledge, and confidence so that they can grow into the best student and individual they can be!
