Elementary School Entrance Test Prep & Kindergarten Admissions in NYC

Preparing Young NYC Students for the Tests That Matter

New York City’s elementary school admissions process is competitive and, for many families, unfamiliar. We have helped children and their families navigate kindergarten entrance exams, Gifted and Talented testing, and independent school admissions — including ERB, OLSAT, BSRA, and other assessments — for more than twenty years. Our approach is warm, age-appropriate, and genuinely effective.

Puzzles for Young Children — Our Preparation Book

We have also published Puzzles for Young Children, our preparation book for families with children ages 4–6 facing kindergarten entrance tests. Whether used alongside working with one of our tutors or on your own at home, it is a wonderful way to introduce young children to the kinds of thinking these tests involve — in a beautiful, engaging format.

Gifted and Talented Testing in NYC

Admission to New York City’s Gifted and Talented programs is determined by scores on the OLSAT and NNAT assessments. These tests require young children to reason spatially, logically, and verbally in ways that many have never been explicitly taught. Our tutors know these tests inside out and prepare young children for them effectively and joyfully.

Independent School Entrance Prep

We have helped students earn places at Dalton, Spence, Brearley, Chapin, Trinity, Collegiate, Nightingale-Bamford, and many other top Manhattan independent schools at the kindergarten and early elementary level. We prepare students for the ERB, WPPSI, and other assessments used in the private school admissions process.

For families navigating the NYC private school admissions process, the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) provides information about their assessments. For Gifted and Talented programs, the NYC DOE Gifted and Talented page has official testing information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tests do NYC kindergarten applicants take?

NYC private school applicants typically take the ERB (Educational Records Bureau) CTP, the WPPSI-IV, or school-specific assessments. For public Gifted and Talented programs, children take the OLSAT and NNAT. We prepare children for all of these assessments.

At what age should we start preparing?

We typically start working with children at ages 4–5, roughly 2–4 months before their scheduled assessment. For Gifted and Talented testing, preparation in the months leading up to the test is usually sufficient. For private school admissions, starting earlier in the fall is advisable.

Will test prep stress out my young child?

Not with the right approach. Our tutors work with young children in a warm, playful, age-appropriate way. Sessions feel like enrichment activities, not drilling. Our book ‘Puzzles for Young Children’ was designed with the same philosophy — preparation should be enjoyable.

What NYC schools does your entrance test prep cover?

We prepare students for entrance to Dalton, Spence, Brearley, Chapin, Trinity, Collegiate, Nightingale-Bamford, Marymount, and many other top Manhattan independent schools, as well as New York City’s Gifted and Talented programs.
