# The New Mark Twain Admissions Tests: A Parent’s Guide To What’s Actually on Them

For decades, admission to Mark Twain I.S. 239 for the Gifted & Talented — Brooklyn’s legendary Coney Island middle school — ran on one thing: how your child performed on a talent test. The exam is a timed multiple-choice test. Families and prep providers consistently report a format of roughly 50 questions — about 30 weighted toward math and problem solving, and about 20 toward computer and technology thinking. The math assumes complete mastery of K–5 content and then goes well past it. Here is what that actually means, broken into the five skill families we see the test drawing from.

### 1. Math that goes beyond the classroom

These are not fifth-grade worksheet questions. Expect:

– **Multi-step problem solving** — problems where the answer requires chaining three or four operations, and where a student who rushes will get a “trap” answer that’s waiting for them among the choices.
– **Sequences and patterns** — arithmetic sequences (“start at 7, add 4 each time — what’s the 14th term?”), Fibonacci-style sequences where each term is the sum of the previous two, and even *interleaved* sequences, where two different patterns alternate positions and the student has to untangle them.
– **Ratios, proportions, and percentages** — paint mixed in a 3:2 ratio, a tank that’s 40% full, a class where the average changes when one student leaves. Comfortable proportional reasoning is a prerequisite, not a bonus.
– **Combinatorics** — “A club has 8 members; how many different two-person teams are possible?” Most fifth graders have never seen a counting problem in their lives. On this test, they will.
– **Optimization** — buying exactly 9 boxes using packs of different sizes and prices for the least money, or picking the most expensive combination of items that stays under a budget. These reward systematic checking over guessing.
– **Working backwards** — a game score goes through several operations and ends at 19; what did it start at? Inverting a chain of operations is one of the purest tests of flexible thinking on the exam.
– **Estimation and number sense** — which value is closest to 58 × 21? Fast, confident approximation buys time for the harder questions.
– **Classic traps** — the famous “fencepost” family: 8 poles in a row create 7 gaps, and cutting a ribbon into 7 pieces takes 6 snips, not 7. The test knows exactly which off-by-one errors ten-year-olds make.

### 2. Spatial and geometric reasoning

A large slice of the exam requires holding shapes in your head:

– **Cube nets** — which arrangement of six squares can and cannot fold into a cube. (A solid 2-by-3 rectangle cannot. Most kids guess wrong until they’ve practiced.)
– **Mirror images and symmetry** — what a figure looks like reflected in a vertical mirror; how many lines of symmetry a regular pentagon has.
– **Coordinate grids** — following movement instructions to a final position.
– **Composite figures** — the perimeter of a rectangle with a square attached to one side, where naive adding gives the wrong answer because the shared edge disappears.
– **3D counting** — a 3-by-3 base of cube towers of different heights: how many cubes in the whole structure?
– **Gears and mechanisms** — if gear A has 24 teeth and turns clockwise, which way does gear C turn, and how many times? Part ratio problem, part spatial visualization.

### 3. Logic puzzles

This is where the exam most clearly separates “good at school math” from “good at thinking”:

– **Constraint puzzles** — four students in a line, three clues, who’s at the front? Three students, three instruments, three days, four clues — which day and instrument belong to Dia? These reward organized case-by-case elimination.
– **All / some statements** — if every card in the box is blue and some cards are striped, what *must* be true? Precise reading of quantifiers trips up strong students constantly.
– **If–then rules** — “If a package is marked EXPRESS, it goes on the express belt. This package did *not* go on the express belt. What must be true?” That’s the contrapositive, and the test expects ten-year-olds to reason through it.
– **Grid logic** — mini Latin-square puzzles: each symbol appears once per row and column; what goes in the missing cell?
– **Boolean conditions** — a gate opens if a badge is RED *or* BLUE *and* the number is *not* 3. Which badge can’t get in? This is programming logic without a computer.

The “computer” portion is not about naming parts of a laptop. It tests whether a child can think like a programmer:

– **Tracing command sequences** — a stack of blocks built by PUSH and FLIP commands: what’s the final order? A robot that adds, multiplies, then subtracts: what comes out?
– **Iterative rules with stopping conditions** — “start at 2; if the number is even add 3, if odd add 4; stop when it passes 18.” Simulating a loop by hand, carefully, without losing track.
– **Resource-budget simulations** — a robot with 12 battery points entering rooms that cost 3 or 4 points, stopping when it can’t afford the next room. How many rooms does it enter?
– **Ciphers and reversible transformations** — a code shifts each letter by a fixed rule; decode the word. This tests inverse thinking, the same skill as working backwards in math.
– **Binary search** — a secret number is one of 64 equally likely options and you may ask yes/no questions: what’s the *smallest* number of questions that guarantees finding it? Students who’ve internalized “each good question cuts the possibilities in half” answer in seconds.
– **Function machines** — inputs go in, outputs come out; deduce the rule and apply it.

### 5. Practical technology and science reasoning

Rounding out the exam are questions closer to real-world judgment:

– **Troubleshooting** — one website won’t load but others will: what’s the most likely cause? A systematic-elimination mindset scores here.
– **Digital citizenship and data privacy** — which plan lets a company use behavior data *and* protect users’ privacy? These have one defensibly best answer, and it rewards mature judgment.
– **Experimental design** — testing which paper towel absorbs most: which condition must be kept the same? This is the classic “fair test” concept, and it’s the beating heart of the Science-talent side of the exam.
– **Data interpretation** — reading a table of results and identifying which statement the data actually *supports*, as opposed to statements that overreach (“the seeds preferred the moist side” vs. “all seeds always prefer moisture”). Distinguishing evidence from speculation is tested repeatedly.

**The bottom line for parents:** a child can have straight 4s in fifth-grade math and still be blindsided by this exam, because roughly half of it lives outside the elementary curriculum entirely. The good news is that every category above is trainable — combinatorics, contrapositives, and cube nets are learnable skills, not innate gifts. But they must be learned *before* January, and practiced under a real clock.

## Creative Writing: A Timed Sample, Not a Portfolio

There is no take-home essay and no portfolio for the Creative Writing talent. Your child sits at Mark Twain and produces original writing on the spot, under timed conditions.

That format choice tells you exactly what’s being evaluated: the ability to organize and execute quickly. Evaluators reward a clear structure (beginning, development, ending — not a story that runs out of time mid-scene), a distinctive voice, specific detail over generic description, and clean mechanics. The single biggest differentiator we see is planning discipline: strong applicants spend the first few minutes outlining rather than writing, which is deeply counterintuitive to most ten-year-olds under pressure.

Preparation here means writing complete, timed pieces weekly across different prompt types — narrative, descriptive, opinion — and revising them with feedback. Reading good books helps a child’s writing over years; timed practice helps it by January.

## Dance and Drama: Live Auditions Are Back

Dance and Drama moved back to in-person auditions at the school after several years of video submissions — a meaningful shift, because performing live for evaluators is a different skill from recording a best take at home. Applicants should be ready for both prepared material and on-the-spot instruction, and preparation should include rehearsing the audition *experience*: performing for unfamiliar adults, taking direction, and recovering from mistakes in real time. – **Mark Twain is citywide.** Any current NYC fifth grader can apply, from any district, which is why thousands of families compete each year.
– **You may rank up to two talents.** Pairing Computer/Math with Science is the natural double, since they share one exam. Whatever the pairing, the school itself cautions families to choose talents the child genuinely wants — admitted students study their talent up to six periods a week for all three years.
– **Registration comes weeks before the application deadline.** Families must register to test through MySchools by early November — for the current cycle, the DOE deadline is November 2, 2026, with applications closing December 11, 2026, and offers released April 7, 2027.
