A Twenty-Year Track Record With NYC Middle School Admissions
Mark Twain Intermediate School 239 — located in Coney Island, Brooklyn — is one of the borough’s most selective middle schools. Admission is by audition across nine distinct talent areas. It is not a traditional standardized test, and generic test prep does not serve Twain applicants well.
Central Park Tutors prepares students specifically for the academic talents at Mark Twain, where content knowledge and structured performance under time pressure are what move decisions. Our tutoring has been recommended by The New York Times, and we have been invited by Columbia University Teachers College to teach test prep.
How Mark Twain Admissions Work
Students apply to Mark Twain during fifth grade. Each applicant selects one or more of the nine talent areas to audition for: Art, Computer Science–Math, Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Instrumental Music, Math–Science, Science–Medicine, and Vocal Music.
Each talent area has its own audition format, set by the school. Academic talents — Math–Science, Computer Science–Math, Creative Writing, and Science–Medicine — involve written or performance-based assessments that test subject knowledge and applied reasoning. Arts and performance talents involve portfolios, live auditions, or recorded performances.
Admission is competitive. Twain consistently ranks among the top middle schools in Brooklyn, with a curriculum and student body oriented around each child’s selected talent pathway.
Which Talents We Prepare Students For
Central Park Tutors focuses on the academic talents at Mark Twain, where our expertise most directly applies:
Math–Science: We prepare students across the full math and science content required, including arithmetic, early algebra, scientific reasoning, and applied problem-solving in a timed format.
Computer Science–Math: Math foundations plus logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and the beginner-level computational thinking that the audition tests.
Creative Writing: We coach writing craft, structure, voice, and the ability to produce a strong draft under time pressure — very different from unhurried classroom writing.
Science–Medicine: Life science, earth science, and scientific reasoning at the fifth-grade level with a focus on the applied, experimental-thinking questions the talent emphasizes.
For the performing-arts talents (Dance, Drama, Vocal Music, Instrumental Music), we don’t provide audition coaching — but we can help with the academic components of the overall application where relevant.
How We Prepare Mark Twain Applicants
Every student starts with a diagnostic in the talent area they’re applying for. From there, we build a talent-specific program over three to six months.
Twain preparation differs meaningfully from preparation for a multiple-choice standardized test. The auditions reward depth and craft rather than breadth. A student auditioning for Creative Writing needs to produce a cohesive, compelling piece under time constraints — which is its own distinct skill. A student auditioning for Math–Science needs to demonstrate fluency across content and clear written communication of reasoning.
We meet one-on-one, in your home or online, typically once or twice a week.
Timeline and Cost
Most families begin Mark Twain prep three to six months before auditions, which typically occur in late winter or early spring of fifth grade. Earlier starts are helpful for creative writing, where voice and range develop over time, and for science talents, where breadth of content knowledge matters.
Our rate is $165 per hour. We do not require prepayment. We bill monthly. All materials are included.
Twain is an unusual admissions process, and most test-prep agencies treat it as a side-note. We treat it as its own thing. Our tutors bring subject-matter expertise first and test-prep experience second — which is the right priority for an audition-based admission.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply to Mark Twain?
Any fifth-grade NYC student can apply to Mark Twain IS 239 for sixth-grade admission. The application is part of the citywide middle school application process. Applicants must select at least one talent area to audition for.
Academic talent auditions typically involve a written or performance-based assessment at the school, administered under timed conditions. Math–Science and Science–Medicine involve subject-matter questions. Creative Writing requires a timed writing sample. Computer Science–Math combines math with logical reasoning.
Can I audition for more than one talent?
Yes. Many students audition for two or three related talents to increase their chances of admission to their strongest area. We can prepare students across multiple talents, though that typically extends the prep timeline.
What’s the difference between Twain and SHSAT prep?
Mark Twain is audition-based — students are evaluated on demonstrated skill in a specific talent area, not on a standardized multiple-choice test. The SHSAT is a single test determining admission to eight high schools. Twain admits sixth graders; the SHSAT admits ninth graders. Preparation for the two is almost entirely different.
When are the auditions held?
Mark Twain auditions are typically held in late winter or early spring of fifth grade, with specific dates set each year. The school publishes the schedule in the fall.
Is Twain a standardized test?
No. Mark Twain admissions are talent-based auditions, not a standardized exam. Each talent area has its own format.
Do you prep the arts talents?
We focus on the academic talents — Math–Science, Computer Science–Math, Creative Writing, and Science–Medicine — where our expertise most directly applies. For performing arts talents, we’d recommend working with specialists in those fields.
